Vi de la Terra Mallorca Wineries Harvest 5 Million Kilos of Grapes This Season

The wineries of the IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) Vi de la Terra Mallorca brought in a total of 5,002,301 kilos of grapes during the 2024 harvest, a million kilos less than last year. These figures confirm forecasts of an average 20% reduction in production.

With all the grapes from the 80 wineries under the IGP Vi de la Terra Mallorca now in, it’s time to reflect on the season. “The initial harvest forecasts proved accurate”, says Marina Vera, manager of IGP Vi de la Terra Mallorca. “We experienced a harvest marked by approximately a 20% reduction in production. However, there was significant variability between vineyards: dry-farmed vineyards were the hardest hit, with production drops exceeding 50%, while irrigated vineyards also saw declines, but some managed to match or slightly surpass last year’s production. So, the results are highly diverse”.

In terms of numbers, 2,197,036 kilos of white grapes were harvested, representing a 16% drop compared to 2023. Meanwhile, 2,805,265 kilos of red grapes were brought in, a 21% decrease from the previous harvest. Overall, production fell by 18.87%, with 1,164,154 fewer kilos of grapes harvested.

“The production decrease affected all grape varieties, whether foreign or local, but it was more noticeable in local varieties, which tend to produce larger grapes. This year, the grapes were smaller,” Vera added. “Foreign varieties were also impacted, particularly Chardonnay, which has faced various issues over the past five years, further reducing its production this year”.

On the bright side, the harvested grapes arrived at the wineries in excellent health and with greater concentration: “We expect this to translate into wines of very high quality”.

This year, Vi de la Terra Mallorca grapes were harvested over a total area of 1,893 hectares, representing a 10% increase in vineyard area compared to 2023. The IGP currently encompasses 80 wineries across Mallorca, with over 300 winegrowers. As a quality label, all wines from the Vi de la Terra Mallorca wineries are made exclusively from grapes grown on the island, adding unique character and a strong connection to the territory.
